On Friday, Jack Andraka, a 15 year old from Maryland, won the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a test for early stage pancreatic cancer that outshines anything on the market.
Jack’s success says a lot about where future solutions to big problems might come from – not necessarily from large company research programs but out of the wider ecosystem of people who are not invested in current research paradigms.
The test, according to claims made in the award, is 28 times cheaper and 100 times more sensitive than current tests. That too is important. A point I made earlier today is the future lies with radical cost reduction, a trend American and European companies would like to defend against but in reality need to find ways to embrace and benefit from.
On the other hand, cautionary observers were quick to point out that the test will not only need FDA approval – which of course can take years – but whoever he partners up with has also to convince Medicare that the test is cost-effective and worthy of insurance coverage. Jack picks up $75,000, for his invention.

Jack Andraka, 15, of Crownsville, Md. was awarded first place for his new method to detect pancreatic cancer at this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), a program of Society for Science & the Public. Based on diabetic test paper, Jack created a simple dip-stick sensor to test blood or urine to determine whether or not a patient has early-stage pancreatic cancer.
